William H. Smith letters, 1862-1863.

Civil War letters of William H. Smith, a U.S. Navy sailor from New York aboard the gunboat U.S.S. Winona, to his brother, J. Canniff Smith of Williamsburgh, N.Y., narrate events during the Mississippi River campaign. Smith describes the naval skirmishes on the Mississippi River that preceded the capture of New Orleans and the city's subsequent fall; the Winona's travels upriver to fire on Confederate artillery batteries in the vicinity of Vicksburg and Natchez; the ship's destruction of Grand Gulf, Miss., a small town from which Smith's ship took rebel fire; and accelerating preparations for an attack on Port Hudson. Smith also writes of his desire to obtain a better-paying position as a gunner and asks for his brother's help in securing a new appointment.
